BIM technology: past, present and future
Building Information Modelling, or, BIM can be traced back to 70s last century. Since the beginning of this century, it has become booming in the field of construction, including AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) and infrastructure along the emergence of various BIM application software, promoting the concepts of “digital twins” and “lifecycle sharing of information”. This presentation introduces the concepts of BIM and its past at first. Then it summarizes the current state-of-the-art and application of the technology based on the application in several real major projects in China. Finally, it predicts the direction for the development of the technology, based on the researches that the speaker’s team has carried out.
Prof. Ma obtained his Doctor Degree in 1992 at Department of Civil Engineering of Nagoya University, Japan. He became a full Professor in 2003 at Tsinghua University.
His major research interests are on the application of information technology in civil engineering. He has been the principal investigator of more than 50 research projects. He has published 18 books and more than 200 papers. As a key member, he took part in the writing of policy documents on applying information technology in construction industry for the central government of China. As the executive editor-in-chief, he organized the writing of and published seven subsequent special industrial reports on the application of information technology in construction industry.
