Career seminar – Academic career abroad


This seminar would cover the following topics:
– Who I am, the course of my career abroad (from Ljubljana, through Stockholm to St. Andrews)
– How the doctorate is conducted abroad (comparison of northern Europe and the Anglo-Saxon area)
– Postdoctoral researcher – what a competitive doctoral student is like
– Permanent academic position – comparison of different systems (Central Europe, Northern Europe, UK, USA, NZ and elsewhere), how to be successful in applying, the importance of perseverance
– Other post-doctoral careers: research institutes, industry, consultancy, government and other agencies, etc. (based on experiences of my doctoral students)

Dr Urška Demšar is Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Geoinformatics in the School of Geography & Sustainable Development at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, UK. She has a PhD in Geoinformatics from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm, Sweden and a background in Applied Mathematics from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. She is currently Associate Editor of the International Journal of Geographical Information Science and in the period 2015-2019 she was co-chair of the International Cartographic Association commission on Visual Analytics (http://viz.icaci.org). Her research is in movement analytics – a topic on which she is collaborating with movement researchers from other disciplines.
