Building Information Modelling as a Game Changer

Predstavitev predavatelja:
Prof. K. Menzel is the director of the MEngSc. Information Technology of Architecture,
Engineering, and Construction (IT in AEC) and the Informatics Research Unit for Sustainable
Engineering (IRUSE). His research include multi-dimensional information management
(big data), Building Information Modelling (BIM), Sustainable Building Operation of Buildings
and Facilities Management. He holds a PhD. and a DSc. from Department of Civil Engineering at
Dresden University of Technology, Germany .

Professor Menzel was the lead principal investigator of numerous industry projects with
Hochtief (IKS-CAD), Bentley, Germany (CAD), Mahle (Raised Floor Systems), Volkswagen (Factory Planning),
United Technologies (Ireland). He has also led or participated in more than 15 Research Projects
worth a total of approximately Euro 20 mil. of funding since 2007. He was the director of the
SFI Strategic Research Cluster “Information Technology for Optimised Building Operation”
(2007 to 2013). He was the Lead Principal Investigator of the industry-driven EU-project
CAMPUS21 with ESB, UTRC, BAM, and SIRUS as research partners from Ireland.

Before joining UCC Prof. Menzel was a researcher and senior lecturer at the Technische Universitaet
Dresden (Germany), Technische Universitaet Braunschweig (Germany) and Carnegie Mellon University,
Pittsburgh, PA. He was the coordinator of an interdisciplinary collaborative design project between
the Centre for Building Performance and Diagnostics at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA (USA)
and the Department of Civil Engineering at Technische Universitaet Braunschweig, Germany (1997 to 2000).
